Autobiography
Bible Study
Neither commentary nor traditional meditations, Eby's Markings are a spiritual memoir. His musings on 70 episodes or texts in the Gospel of Mark blend intellectual inquiry with confessional worship. They meld poignancy, whimsy, grit, doubt, sorrow, and inspiration. Anyone attending to the care of her or his soul will find nurture here.

Eby's project from the practice of old spiritual disciplines: Bible Study, meditation, prayer, contemplation, silence, writing. Using the Gospel of Mark for his own Markings, Eby explored the Gospel through the grid of his forty years teaching literature at the college level, reading and writing, listening to music, walking in the orchard and woods, living in Africa, heeding one wise woman, rearing children, stumbling towards God. Then, under the influence of a given text and personal memory, he sat down and wrote, yielding these personal musings on a spare but elegant Gospel.

As Paul Friesen has written in regard to crosses he created for the United Methodist Church of Hesston, Kansas, the poems in On the Cross are "not decorations, but for provocative meditation, inviting you to confront Him who is Life, Light and Love."

These poems—augmented by John Leon's line drawings of the Cross based on Paul Friesen's crosses—fit into a long tradition of meditations on the Cross articulated in poetry, prose, painting, music. Some of the most famous of the literary meditations are those of St.John of the Cross, George Herbert, John Donne and Paul Gerhardt. The poems in On the Cross reflect these earlier meditations as well as cite paintings by Matthias Grünewald, El Greco, Salvador Dalí, and Giacometti. Music— Bach, hymns, gospel, folk—also enters the volume as a kind of meditation.

Readers are invited to read these devotional poems and then engage in their own meditations. The poems in this volume are but the beginning of an approach to a symbol that leads up to the spiritual life that begins in the teachings of Christ.

Spirituality
When it comes to mail spirituality, men seem to have only two choices for models--to be strong, take charge and independent, like warriors, or silent an along, like monks. That, says Gareth Brandt, is far too limiting.

"When I started examining the subject, I thought there must be other images we could use to help us define what a Christian man looks like," he says. "I was sure that not every man wants to go into battle, or withdraw from others."

Brandt, who teaches spirituality at Columbia Bible College in Abbotsford, B.C., decided to test his idea by inviting some male friends to participate in a discussion group exploring different images of male spirituality. He sent each chapter out in advance to the group, which then met to talk about it.

The result of those meetings is Under Construction, which uses the story of Joseph in the book of Genesis to explore other images of male spirituality-images such as peacebuilder, forgiver, reconciler and creator of God's shalom.

For Brandt, male spirituality "reaches its height when it shows compassion to all people, beginning with those close to us. It's about being part of building God's commonwealth of love and justice, having the courage to face the wounds of our past and building a marriage, a family, and a career while empowering others to build with us."

Under Construction: Reframing Men's Spirituality was made possible through the generious support of Mennonite Men, an organization of the Mennonite Church that promotes and develops resources for men.

Business
Does Christian faith kick into gear only on Sunday morning? Or does it run full steam all week long? Are "ordinary workers" an optional appendix in the body of Christ? Do they feel less spiritual than those who work full-time in a recognized "ministry"?

Wally Kroeker, editor of The Marketplace, sees all of life as God's domain. When we go to work, God is on the job with us. We are God's double agents in the daily marketplace.

Whatever we do, whatever we produce, whatever we buy and sell--it all is done in the presence of the Almighty. God cares about the work we do.

These 52 short weekly musings are for everyone with work to do, whether grocery shopping, selling cars, or hoeing weeds. Kroeker shows the common threads that link our jobs and our faith.

This books celebrates the work week of God.
