Joseph Armstrong's father showed more concern for his farms and horses than he did for his wife and children. Work was first. Mishaps were dealt with harshly. Praise was a foreign language. The family suffered cruel scorn, rejection, and deprivation. All the while, Bennet Armstrong hypocritically portrayed himself to others as flawlessly pious. The Armstrong home was a potential hotbed for bitterness and emotional desolation.

Thankfully, a devout mother bridged the gap, loving her children, telling them Bible stories, teaching them to respect their father, and praying fervently for their safety and salvation. Annie Armstrong's prayers were heard. Joseph came to trust his kind heavenly Father who helped him love and forgive and rise above his circumstances to a life of purpose and peace.

This story, sometimes heartrending, sometimes heartening, points to the one true hope for all man's miseries--Jesus Christ, the true Light from heaven.

Anabaptist
Elaine Reidel, shocked by her cousin's whispered secret, pried into her past--and discovered something that shook her life and shattered her future. In the aftermath of the sudden change that turned her life upside down, Elaine turned to the source of her turmoil for the peace that she longed for.

But Bibles in the vernacular language did not come without a price, and Elaine and her cousins found themselves facing risks that they never dreamed of, with a peace in the midst of it all that they could not explain. They learned to look past the tangled present into the unseen--into the eternity.

Never again would Elaine's life be calm and predictable, but the words that she learned to treasure still shone clear; that no matter what the circumstances or how high the price, we are His witnesses.

The inspiration for this story comes from the Martyr's Mirror where the story of John and Peter's martyrdom is recorded. The unnamed girl in that account the author called Elaine. Leonhard Keyser's story is also factual. The rest of the characters and the majority of the story plot are fictional.

One interesting thing about church history is how often young people were such strong, faithful witnesses. Their stories show us that we don't need to wait until we are thirty or so to throw our lives wholeheartedly into the cause of the Kingdom. The Lord calls us to follow Him-now! May this story draw our hearts to Him, and may He receive all the praise.

The 1500's were stirring times in Europe. Luther nailed his ninety-five theses to a church door in Germany and exploded the powder keg of unrest that seethed for decades.

Against this background, Regina Strahm finds herself caught between two religious factions in Switzerland. Her parents repeatedly warn her against the Anabaptist heresy, and the young man she loves has no doubts about the state church's claims.

But why then does Zwingli's official religion fail to satisfy her spiritual emptiness? Have the heretics found a quality of life worth dying for?

At Anna's church, war is wrong wrong wrong. The vestibule doesn't have a fancy signboard commemorating soldiers who sacrificed their lives. Thou shalt not kill, period, and the church folks have no intention of chucking this big mainstay belief. Still, is theirs a bloodthirsty God? Is Anna crazy for wondering? Have Anabaptist groups like hers-Mennonites, Church of the Brethren, the Brethren in Christ, and others--clung to a skewed gospel?
