Cultures
| Plain Diversity is a result of a study conducted by Steve Nold and Tom Meyers on the
Old Order Amish communities in Indiana. They visited each of the Amish settlements in Indiana,
interviewed people in each place, and looked at archival and library material about each settlement. They
also visited Amish settlements in Michigan, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and Ontario with ties to Indiana. This
book also looks at Amish who shop at Wal Mart, vacation in Florida and attend public schools. It is a
sequel to An Amish Patchwork also by Meyers and Nolt. Copyright 2007 John Hopkins

| Newly Revised. The Amish, one of America's most intriguing peoples, have
survived for 300 years! While much has been written on the Amish
recently, little has appeared about their history. This book brings
together for the first time in one volume a thorough history of the
Amish people. From their beginnings in Europe through their settlement
in North America, the Amish have struggled to maintain their beliefs
and traditions in often hostile settings. Atlantic crossings,
westward migration, military conscription and compulsory school laws
were just a few of the many challenges to the Amish church through the
years. Caught in the currents and conflicts of national life, the
Amish have remained a distinct people in America's melting pot.
Authoritative, thorough and interestingly written, A History of
the Amish presents the deep and rich heritage of the Amish people.
Includes a substantial bibliography for further reading and study.

Series
| Amish culture has been rooted in the soil since its beginnings in
1693. But what happens when members of America's oldest Amish community
enter non-farm work in one generation? How will hundreds of cottage
industries and micro-enterprises reshape the heart of Amish life? Will
traditional eighth grade education still prove adequate? What about
gender roles, child-rearing practices, leisure activities, and growing
ties with outsiders? Amish Enterprise was the first book to
discuss these dramatic changes that are transforming Amish communities
across North America. Based on interviews with more than 150 Amish
entrepreneurs, the authors trace the rise and impact of businesses in
Lancaster's Amish settlement in recent decades. In this new edition,
the authors update demographic and technological changes, and also
describe Amish enterprises outside of Pennsylvania in a new chapter.
