Peace
Subtitled The Victim's Journey Through the 15 Elements of Serious Crime, this book is a rare insight into the fragmented world of the crime victim. The book is written in an easy-to-read conversational style. It organizes the crime victim detour into stages and elements that most victims will encounter. Each chapter begins with a family-type story to gently introduce the theme or the element. This is followed by a description of the element, the underlying reasons for it (including academic research), the consequences and then practical helps for dealing with the element. The book is accessible and applicable for anyone who has experienced a crime and for those who support them.

This book addresses the personal and justice issues encountered after a violent act. Derksen, whose daughter was murdered, writes especially for victims of crime, their friends and family and service providers.

Education
When Wilma and Cliff Derksen's daughter was killed in 1984, they chose the word "forgiveness," hoping it would somehow spare them the horrors of the aftermath of violence and the ensnaring justice issues. But Wilma confesses: "I soon came to resent anyone who said: 'Just forgive' as if it were that easy."

Later she joined a support group of other parents of murdered children where it became obvious that forgiveness was considered an "F" word. Since, she has teamed with Sunday school teachers, pastors, and counselors in the Winnipeg, Manitoba area to explore how storytelling can become a method and the message of moving toward forgiveness of others.

In this study guide, Wilma L Derksen, Tym Elias, and Brenda Suderman share a seven- session tested approach on storytelling. This is a vital resource for persons in classes, study groups, and congregations who wish to take steps toward forgiveness.

Asia
How do Christians think about peacemaking in a new millennium? What can we do about ethnic and religious conflicts? How can we create peaceful communities and influence the world system?

Noted writers from Africa, Asia, Europe, and North America tackle such questions. Drawing on rich traditions and experiences, they ponder peacemaking in local and global settings through stories of real people and their work. Stories like these can anchor us in the life of the church as it is experienced, through times of hope and optimism as well as through fears and crises. This is practical peacemaking at work.

Today the emphasis is on the need to build a just peace in direct and tangible ways. The large issues and threats are still with us, but our response is led by the stories of communities mobilizing to resolve problems through immediate and direct participation.

Bible Study
Peace
Violence in its varied forms is all around us-in the media, on the streets, and even in our homes and churches. Some forms are very obvious, such as murder and rape; others affect us more subtly, such as video games, action toys, or murder mystery dinners. What steps can we take, as congregations and as individuals, to deal with our fears, respond biblically and work at creative alternatives to violence?

It contains the final version of the statement on violence that was discussed at the Mennonite Church and General Conference Mennonite Church conventions in 1997, along with a six-session study guide by Lois Barrett. along with a list of resources, it also includes true stories of Mennonites who have dealt with different forms of violence. The study, designed for participants and leaders alike, will help you: reflect on your own experience with violence; consider what the Bible says; plan possible learning outcomes; and take action.

Peace
From the medieval crusades to the latest violence in the Middle East, warriors have long claimed the Bible's support for their battles. Patricia M. McDonald argues that many biblical stories, read as part of a canon from Genesis to Revelation, contain resources for turning violence to service of God and humanity. As varied and complex as life itself, these narratives can provide us with imaginative possibilities and steady motivation to move beyond the narrow defensiveness and self- interest that are becoming ever more problematic in an increasingly interconnected world.
